Planting & Care

1. Planting: Butterfly bushes thrive in full sunlight, or between 6-8 hours per day. Don't amend the soil when planting a butterfly bush. Also, avoid mulching directly around it, as it can hold too much moisture. Mulch the surrounding beds, but give the bush clearance and never mulch all the way up to the main stems.

2. Watering: Butterfly bushes require average moisture and need well-drained soil to avoid root rot. Plant them a few inches above soil level to promote water drainage.

3. Fertilizing: Butterfly bushes grow and bloom better with fertilization. Use a granular rose or garden fertilizer in early and late spring, but never fertilize after July to avoid dormancy interference.

4. Pruning: Prune butterfly bushes in spring after new growth. Warmer climate = more pruning. Large bushes grow tall, and flowers form high. Don't prune or plant in the fall if you're in zone 5 or colder.
